The Paraná at first light

Two lodges of our own, and one we work with

Córdoba for the birds and the Paraná for the mixed bag and the dorado — both ours. Patagonia for the trout, at a partner house. Two of the three are called Bravo, and that is very nearly the only thing they share.

Argentina

Rio Bravo and Bravo Sur are not the same place

It is worth saying plainly, because the names invite the mistake. Rio Bravo sits in the province of Santa Fe, on the Paraná — a warm, wide river where the quarry is duck, dove and perdiz above the water and golden dorado in it. Bravo Sur is some 800 miles south of it, in Neuquén, at the foot of the Andes: cold, clear rivers running off the mountains, and trout on the fly. Different provinces, different seasons, different tackle, different kind of week.

If you want both, they can be run as one trip — the two rivers, one after the other. But choose them for what they are, not because the names rhyme.

The lodges

Each one, in short

A Pony Express staging post from 1874, renovated. Ten rooms, eighteen guests, a gun room of more than a hundred guns, and dove on the wing every month of the year.

Sierra Brava Lodge

Rio Bravo Lodge on the Paraná

Rio Bravo — Santa Fe

Eight rooms above the Paraná, with a fishing dock at the bottom of the garden. Duck from May to August, dove and perdiz alongside it, and golden dorado in the same water.

Rio Bravo Lodge

The Chimehuín river, Patagonia

Bravo Sur — Patagonia (partner lodge)

Four suites and eight rods on the riverbank in northern Patagonia, reached from Chapelco. The Aluminé, the Chimehuín and the Collón Curá, plus private water almost nobody fishes. Run by Stone River Lodge, who we work with.

Tell us the week you have, and we will tell you where to spend it

Dates decide most of it. Duck only flights from May to August; the trout rivers open in November. Give us the month and the rest is straightforward.
